Parent/Child Activities
Below I have included three parent/child activities for you to complete with your child at home. The activities include both mathematics and literacy. Enjoy!
Activity 1: Monster Shapes
This activity will encourage your child to be creative and use shapes in a way that he or she may have never thought of using them. Your child will manipulate different shapes and incorporate literacy in this activity.
Standards: Standard C.2.3.4.A.2: Classify two‐dimensional figures by properties of their lines and angles. Standard CC.1.4.4.L: Demonstrate a grade‐appropriate command of the conventions of standard English grammar, usage,capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. Activity 2: Geometric Riddles
This activity helps to encourage your child's geometric vocabulary use. It is perfect for the ride to practice or waiting in line at the doctors, because you can complete the activity almost anywhere!
Standards: Standard C.2.3.4.A.2: Classify two‐dimensional figures by properties of their lines and angles. Standard CC.1.5.4.A: Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions on grade level topics and texts, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly. Activity 3: Storigami
When you combine storytelling and origami you end up with storigami. Storigami integrates the art of folding shapes, origami, with storytelling. You and your child can read one of the many stories provided in the website below and create origami that goes along with the story.
Standards: Standard CC.2.3.4.A.3: Recognize symmetric shapes and draw lines of symmetry Standard CC.1.1.4.E: Read with accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
